How to Rename a Data Collection Workstation?

The steps to rename a data collection workstation would include:

1. Closing (disabling) all open sets. You will want to disable all of the sets that have been opened on the to-be-replaced workstation before you remove it from the system. When you enable a set for a product configuration, the set (document) is checked out to that workstation and you don’t want them to remain checked out when you remove the workstation from the system as new workstation cannot enable a new set until open sets from the old workstation are disabled. This is easy to check. Just Open SPC Operator on the workstation. Any location with a part number under it has an open set. See the image below.

2. Uninstall the old workstation. You will want to uninstall the Suite using the uninstall wizard in Control panel\Add/Remove Programs\WPG Suite.

3. From another workstation that has Desktop installed, de-assign the licenses assigned to the old workstation or at least check the Desktop and SPC Operator module license under Desktop\Administration\Licenses, the Workstation tab to make sure the licenses were released during the uninstall process. If they were NOT released, remove the workstation at this time for any licenses assigned to this workstation. That should include Desktop and SPC Operator at a minimum but it may include others.

4. Run the workstation setup on the workstation. From the workstation to be renamed, browse to the share on the server and run the WSSetup.exe to install the Desktop module. It is during this process, you will get to assign the new workstation name. Once the Desktop is installed, Install Panel will be launched and you can install any other components you want on this workstation for which you have available licenses by highlighting the application(s) and selecting the Install button. Multi-select is supported.

The new workstation will likely need to be configured in SPC System Setup to see all of the locations the old one could ‘see’, if the old workstation was configured this way. If only the default is listed under workstations in SPC System Setup, this step will not be necessary.
