APQP Customer Perspective
The Problems
To a customer organization (an organization that is managing APQP with it supplier community) the challenge is one of communication and information sharing. Although the standard is well known, which minimizes the cost of implementing it with their supplier community, most organizations do not have an information infrastructure already established with their supplier community (click here to see more about Supplier Process Management challenges).
Organizations implementing APQP with their suppliers are facing pressure to effectively manage APQP from two sides:
- Internal – Management has invested in organizationally in APQP and expects to see reduced cost and better deliveries as a result
- Customers – Customers are demanding evidence that their suppliers are effectively executing APQP with their suppliers

The Needs
Organizations that are implementing APQP with their supplier community need to be able to effectively execute the following:
- Manage the APQP process with their suppliers – Managing APQP successfully means providing the required deliverables to the right people at the right time. Suppliers not only need to know what to do, but when.
- Provide a single source of APQP information – The information provided in the APQP process is critical for many disciplines within both the customer organization and their supplier community. It must be accurate and easy to find,
- Provide Visibility to Risk – Successful implementation of APQP requires that risks be identified in time to take action. Summarizing the information needs to be automated so that different people can see the slices of information they need to assess risk.
